Preseason rankings can be regarded as pure speculation. Factoring in last season’s results and what teams will be returning the Cuero Fightin’ Gobblers have landed at #6 in the 2022 Dave Campbell’s 4A Divison II preseason rankings.

The Gobblers are coming off of an impressive 13-2 season that saw them advance to their 18th semifinal appearance in school history last fall. After being crowned kings of region 4 last season, the new UIL district realignment slides Cuero into region 3 for the next few seasons. The Gobblers will also have a new signal-caller as Jerod Fikac takes over the reins as head coach/athletic director.

With two-a-days and kickoff peeping right around the corner, avid Gobbler football fans can’t wait to see the great green and white under the Friday night lights.

Cuero will be returning several all-district selections from last year’s team. District 13-4A defensive MVP and first-team all-state linebacker Sean Burks will be back roaming sideline to sideline. Burks will be accompanied by newcomer of the year last season, Brandt Patek and Donavin Jones, who was a first-team outside linebacker selection. Filling out the rest of the Mean Green defense are first-team defensive linemen, JaVaree Bacon and Christian Holmes. In the secondary, Cuero will return first-team safety Dayson Varela and second-team safety Jeremiah Wilson. Burks and Varela are both preseason all-state picks on the defensive side of the ball by Dave Campbell’s.

On the offensive side of the ball, first-team offensive linemen Kyle Weghorst will help pillar the offensive line along with second-team Matt Guererro and Cameron Body. First-team running backs Tycen Williams and Zyler Jones will create a dynamic tandem after rushing for a combined 2,600 yards and over 40 touchdowns on the ground last season.

Cuero’s non-district schedule is stout. Four out of the five non-district contests will be against ranked opponents.
