The Yorktown Kitty Kats varsity basketball team opened up their 2019-20 season with road wins over Nixon-Smiley and Bloomington. On Tuesday, Yorktown picked up a hard-fought 41-37 win at the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs. Using full-court pressure, the Kitty Kats jumped out to an 7-0 lead before Nixon-Smiley scored.
Yorktown kept up the pressure and increased their lead to 27-8 in the 2nd quarter, before the Lady Mustangs cut the lead to 29-14 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Kitty Kats were plagued by fouls and cold shooting, as Nixon-Smiley outscored them 11-4 to make the score 33-25 going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, both teams fouled a lot, as a combined 31 free throws were shot in the quarter.
As Kitty Kat after Kitty Kat fouled out, the Lady Mustangs crept closer, cutting the lead to 35-34 with 1:30 left in the game. However, free throws by sophomore Seely Metting and junior Kadie Dueser kept the Yorktown lead. Four Kitty Kats fouled out in the game and Yorktown finished the game with only four players on the floor, but managed to pull out the 41-37 win.
Metting had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Dueser and junior Katelyn Dodds had eight points apiece.
