Lady Gobblers come up short in Gonzales

Cuero boys basketball coach Chad Hartley isn’t concerned with his team facing a rival. Their focus is coming away with a win. They were able to do just that last Friday night in Gonzales in district-opener, 53-43. Leading by six at halftime, Cuero would double their leading through three quarters on their way to the critical district win.

“Real big,” Hartley said of the outcome. “I don’t care if it’s a rival. To come somewhere in district and get a win on the road is big.”

Coming out of their Christmas break and playing for the first time since the Industrial tournament, Dec. 19-21, the Gobblers were a little rusty in the opening quarter. They settled in before halftime, though, and didn’t look back.

After the win, coach Hartley was quick to point areas where they must improve. “Sprinting back on defense when the game’s one the line, contesting shots, taking away the middle,” he stated.

“More the defensive side when you’re up, we got complacent. These guys gotta learn.”
