One of their best halves of play this season was soon followed by an inconsistent second half for the Lady Gobblers. Outrebounded, Cuero dropped last Tuesday’s district game to La Vernia, 53-42, their second straight loss of the season.

Cuero led by four after the first quarter and six at halftime, but the Lady Bears made their way back early in the third quarter. La Vernia tied the game heading to the final quarter before outscoring Cuero, 16-5, over the final eight minutes.

“In the second half, we got a little out-physicaled, and they [La Vernia] won the the battle of the boards,” coach Amy Crain said.

“They got a lot of second and third looks. It’s tough to overcome when you give a team that’s good, and I’ll give them credit, those opportunities. That was the difference in the game down the stretch.”

Sophomore point guard Helana Chadwick was a force all night for La Vernia, but Crain was please with how Cuero defended her.
