For the second consecutive season, the Lady Gobblers’ basketball season ended in the area round at the hands of an impressive squad from Corpus Christi West Oso. A 10-point loss, 46-36, the game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated.
“I’m just proud of the kids,” head coach Amy Crain said following a fast paced game which saw Cuero take a one point lead into the second quarter. “They fought their tails off, and we knew it was going to take that effort.”
Cuero changed things up defensively to try and handle a talented group of post players for the Lady Bears.
“We did something different that we hadn’t really done all year long, and I felt like that was our best way to beat them,” Crain noted. “We just sandwiched their big kids. Obviously, their posts were their strength. They outsized us, and our strategy was if they’re going to beat us, we’re going to try to make them beat us from outside.”
Crain kept her defense in a zone most of the night until late in the game.
“It worked; it kept us in the game,” she said.
