A high flying start, featuring six straight points to open the game from Ashley Price and a nine-point lead after the first quarter, wouldn’t be enough, as the Lady Gobblers lost to Navarro on senior night, 41-31. Price and Ibree Coe combined for all 14 of Cuero’s first quarter points, 10 from Price, but a quick 8-0 run by Navarro put them within one.

The Panther would proceed to outscore Cuero, 21-5, in the second quarter on the way to a seven-point halftime lead they would never relinquish.

“We really started off well,” coach Amy Crain said of her team. “We were focused. We had lots of energy. We were ready to play. We just got in a little foul trouble. They started executing better. I think we had some lapses on defense that led to some easy buckets for them.”

The biggest thing to coach Crain was being out-rebounded in the second quarter, which happened when Clayre Pullin went to the bench with foul trouble.

“They scored 21 points that quarter after only scoring five the first quarter,” Crain said. “A lot of that was second and third chance opportunities, because we didn’t do a good job of blocking out and rebounding. We talked about that at halftime.”
