Despite being handed an emphatic 19-3 loss to La Vernia during the first half of district play, Cuero’s Lady Gobblers were not phased heading into their second meeting on April 2. In only her second game back from a broken hand, junior pitcher Ariel Diaz displayed an exceptional outing. Cuero didn’t allow a single run to score over the first six frames and held on for a 5-4 win, which improved their district record to 6-4.

“It was a huge response from our team and our program,” Cuero coach Cody Miller said. “We knew were going to have to perform at the highest level to even give ourselves a chance. Our kids came out and focused, and we had a lot of energy.”

The game was deadlocked over the first several innings before sophomore Kaidence Dolan came through with a hit to put Cuero on top midway through the game. “Their defense made several big mistakes and that cost them,” Miller said. “With the speed we have and the ability to execute, that’s kind of our game plan. We’ve been doing that well.”
