Coming off a freshman season, in which she was the district’s newcomer of the year, sophomore point guard Zha’Vanna “Z” Gray was a force in Cuero’s season-opening win over Goliad, 42-17. Z Gray led Cuero with 19 points and five steals, but coach Amy Crain noted how pleased she was with her entire team.
“It’s a new group of kids competing, so you’re always wanting to see how they’re gonna compete out there together,” Crain said of the opener. “You see them in practice, but they’re itching to get out there. I was pleased with the win. I was pleased with the effort. I thought the girls played hard.”
Defensively, Cuero were nearly impenetrable, as they held the Tigerettes to two points in the first quarter and five in the opening half. On the offensive end, Crain remarked how Cuero focused on taking good shots and were patient.
“They didn’t all fall, but that’s gonna happen in the game,” she said. “All in all, for a first game, it’s nice to get off to a 1-0 start. We can build on that.”
