The Cuero Record

When Industrial arrived in Cuero last Tuesday, they certainly weren’t expecting to get swept on all three levels. The freshman squad would secure the win in two sets (25-16, 25-20), followed by the JV winning in two sets (25-14, 25-22).

Once varsity’s turn arrived, the start was not what they were hoping for. In a hole early, the Lady Gobblers would fall behind 6-0 in the first set. Quickly settling into the game, Cuero would find some much need momentum after two back-to-back kills from Arissa Carbonara and Cydine Johnson that brought the score to 13-8. Cuero would trail 18-11 before ripping off a 6-0 run that brought the game within one score, 18-17. Down the stretch miscues would haunt the Lady Gobblers from securing the comeback and would fall in set one, 25-21.

A completely different team showed up right out of the gates in set two. Back and forth in the early going, Cuero would begin to create some separation after being tied at 14 all. The Lady Gobblers’ size advantage seemed to really begin to play a factor with the lively crowd helping to carry the Lady Gobblers to the set win 25-20.

“We have to keep energy and momentum to keep playing like how we did. We didn’t have enough of it in the first set and we came back and won it in the last three using energy,” said Darcy Leinen.

Progressing through set three, the Lady Gobblers would rally to take their first 10-point lead of the night. Industrial, going on a 9-0 run, would quickly erase the lead. Industrial now within three, 22-19, the Lady Gobblers had enough. A quick 3-0 run that was capped off by a Daniella Saenz kill gave Cuero their second straight set.

“That’s tough to let teams get momentum like that,” said Lemley on the Lady Cobras’ 9-0 run. “That is one of our goals, is to prevent that from happening.”
