Editor’s Note: Thirty years have already passed since Cuero High School’s last state championship in football in 1987. In honor of that historic season, The Cuero Record will have stories throughout this season with players and coaches from 1987.
Kirk Laging was a senior on the 1987 team. He started at left guard and was a second string defensive end. One of his main jobs was to pull on the sweep play to the left to make room for Robert Strait.
“I would try to get him close to a first down, but after that he would turn up the heat, and I couldn’t keep up with him,” Laging recalled.
There were plenty of good times playing football in Cuero for Laging, he does not miss the two-a-days.
“I think about those boys out there and I’m like, “I don’t know how in the world we did it,”” Laging stated.
Laging was also on the team the year before in 1986 that made it to the state finals but came up short against Jefferson.
“We pretty much knew what we wanted to do,” Laging said of the team’s mindset going into 1987. “We knew what we had to do to get it done.”
