The Wildcats were quick to score  in their Homecoming game against  the Brentwood Bears on Friday, Sept.  10. With 11:14 still remaining on the  clock, Kalen Barefield scored off a 55  yard run. Andres Archuleta’s kick was  good and the Wildcats were ahead  7-0. The Bears would fumble and give  the Wildcats a chance to extend their  lead.Barefield would enter the end  zone this time off a 35-yard pass from  quarterback, Drew Alexander. The  kick was blocked. With 8:02 in the period  the Yorktown team was up 13-0.  The first period would conclude with  the Wildcats winning, 20-7. DeQuan  Clay would score off a 3 yard run  towards the middle of the first period  and the Bears would finally get in the  end zone with 16 seconds of play left.

In the second quarter, it appeared  that the early lead was in jeopardy as  the Bears pieced together two touchdowns  in the final two minutes. The  Wildcats were up by a slim margin of  six points. The Bears would reach the  end zone with 59 seconds left giving  the Wildcats the feat of trying to  piece together a touchdown with less  than a minute to play. The determined  Yorktown team would march  down the field and score. Right when  momentum looked like it would swing  to their opponents the Wildcats kept  the energy by driving down field and  scoring with :03 seconds left. Barefield’s  1 yard run concluded halftime,  33-21.

The Bears would not easily fold and  instead had a dominating third quarter.  They would hold the Wildcats  scoreless while running for two touchdowns.  With 42 seconds left in the  third the Bears to tie up the game.

The Wildcats started the fourth,  33-33. Alexander would scramble into  the end zone with an 8-yard run to  take the lead back, 39-33. The Bears  would rush for a touchdown with  3:22 left in the fourth. Their kick was  good, giving them the lead for the  first time of the night. The Wildcats  would march downfield capturing the  lead with a 9-yard touchdown pass by  Alexander to Gabe Latta with exactly  one minute of play left. There was one  minute left between them and victory.  The Wildcat defense would rise to the  challenge and prevent the Bears from  scoring. Therefore, securing the 45-40  victory for the Wildcats.

Coach Caffey demonstrated how  proud he was of his team after the  game. His speech to the players included,  “You had a chance to fold up,  but not a one of you did.”

Stat highlights include Alexander  completing 22 of 34 passes for 264  yards and three touchdowns; 37 yards  rushing and one touchdown. Barefield  88 rushing yards and two touchdowns,  167 receiving yard and two  touchdowns. Latta 73 rushing yards,  nine receiving yards and one touchdown.  Clay 25 rushing yards and 1  touchdown, 42 receiving yards. Dalton  Eckhardt with an interception.  The Wildcats will be back in action  on Friday, Sept. 17. Kickoff against  Stockdale is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
