Midway through tennis season, Cuero coach Michael Coffman decided to make a change with his top two players, and it has quickly paid off. Less than two months later, Rhett Leslie and Devyn Whittington will represent Cuero High School at the Region IV tournament, a first for Whittington in his senior season, while Leslie qualified as a sophomore in singles.
In preparation for regionals, Coffman put together a qualifier tournament in Cuero on April 11 with some of the top players in the area from La Vernia, Navarro, Goliad, Shiner and Runge attending.
“It’s a win-win,” Coffman said. “Other schools are looking for other competition. Now, it’s just a matter of getting certain matchups to see different looks that we might see later on. It just improves everybody’s game overall.”
Whittington, who also excels on the football field and basketball court, has an exceptionally strong passion for tennis. Making it to regionals for the first time as a senior means a lot to him.
