The Cuero Record

A total of 17.2 miles separate Gobbler Stadium from Bulldog Stadium. If there has been one main stay since Gobbler football was introduced back in 1911, it’s playing old school DeWitt County rival the Yoakum Bulldogs.

This season will mark the 114th career meeting between the two schools that have played every single year dating back to 1939. The all-time record see’s Cuero long dominating the rivalry with a record of 72-35-6, but since 2010 the Bulldogs of Yoakum lead the series 7-6 raising the bar in the smash mouth rivalry.

Since Yoakum’s drop to the 3A classification back in the 2016-17 season, the Bulldogs have mustered up a 56-24 record that includes a state championship appearance, and three straight trips to the 3A Division I state semifinals. Last season, the Bulldogs went 7-4 with a bi-district exit. They are now entering year number eight with Bo Robinson at the helm.

This year’s Yoakum roster will showcase a lot of youth. Returners to watch are RB/LB Jayden Jones who rushed for a mere 1,600 yards on the ground last season. DB/WR Qyion Williams, LB Will Robbins, WR/DB Kadarius Price, RB/DL TyJuan Garza, and DE Drake Deel are just a few Bulldogs to watch this Friday night when the Gobblers travel to Bulldog Stadium.

The Sept. 9 match up will also be the Bulldogs home opener. When playing at home over the last six seasons Yoakum is 23-8. The Gobblers last win in Yoakum came on a 14-7 win back in the 2016-17 season.
