As Seely Metting entered last Friday’s UIL conference 2A pole vaulting state final, the event would mark her last competition in a Yorktown uniform. The atmosphere of the lively crowd in Austin with heatwaves beaming is enough to bring out the best in everyone competing. In a field full of the best nine 2A pole vaulters across the state of Texas, Metting’s performance ended with her topping out at 10’ feet even on her fifth attempt of the day.

Metting’s competitive nature left her feeling like she could have done even better. “It was good,” Seely expressed about her performance. “I mean it could have been better. I was practicing better than I vaulted today, but the adrenaline rush and big crowd can make things nerve-racking. I didn’t compete like I wanted to, but I still did better than I could have done.”

Going four for five through her first five attempts, supplied Metting with the momentum she needed to maintain her spot in the field. On her sixth and seventh attempts with the bar set at 10’-6”, her day would come to an end sitting in sixth place. A tiebreaker with Lovelady’s Scout Lovell was determined for the sixth and seventh place spots. Metting earned sixth after clearing 10’ feet in less attempts. The sixth-place spot Metting earned put Yorktown High School on the board with one point at the 2A State Meet.
