New Year's hoops
By Roger Cowan
With the New Year celebration behind us, the local dribblers wasted no time getting back into action.
The Yorktown Wildcats hit the court on Jan. 2 with an away game against Falls City. In a close game in which both teams gave it all they had, Falls City would squeak out a win by a score of 79-78 over the Wildcats. Keeping up the road warrior ways, Yorktown would load the bus once more on Jan. 5 to visit Waelder. Once again the difference between a W and an L would be a single basket, as the Wildcats fell to Waelder by a 60-59 score.
The Wildcats JV team would beat Falls City 56-38 when they met on the 2nd, taking some of the sting out of the varsity loss.
With their game against Runge cancelled, the Kitty Kats would enjoy a bit more rest than the boys team. They faced their only opponent of the week at home when Weimar came to visit. The JV girls would take the court to start the evening, and would fall short to Weimar by a score of Weimar 42, Yorktown 1. Later in the evening, the Varsity Kitty Kats would also fall short to Weimar by a 65-32 final as the buzzer sounded.
The Nordheim Pirates faced off against St. Joseph on the 2nd, but would come up short at the buzzer, falling 56-35 to St. Joseph. Hosting Shiner in Nordheim on the 5th, the Pirates would once again come up short in the end by a score of 51-26.
The Nordheim Lady Pirates would face the Bruni Badgers with a distinct disadvantage on the Jan. 4. With only five Lady Pirates taking the court against Bruni’s ten players, the Lady Pirates would show themselves to be the stronger team with a final score of 59-26 in Nordheim’s favor.
