Thunderstorms mixed in with a loss couldn’t dampen the spirits of Nordheim’s youthful baseball team. The young program was placed in the regional quarterfinals of this season’s 1A playoffs by virtue of being the only team in their two-team district to form a team.

“They tried hard,” Kevin Wilson said, Nordheim’s baseball coach and superintendent. “A bunch of them haven’t played much before, and you have to give them credit. We get better. One of these days, we’re gonna put it all together. I’m proud of them.”

Only three of Nordheim’s 10 players have baseball experience prior to high school. One of those is junior pitcher and shortstop Jakob Denton, who played Little League baseball in Cuero.

Denton tallied Nordheim’s lone hit to start the game.
