Pirates, Wildcats Battle to the Buzzer

The Yorktown Wildcats opened their season at home Friday night, Nov. 22, as the Nordheim Pirates came to town. The first quarter featured back and forth action between the Wildcats and Pirates. Headed into the second quarter the game was tied, 6-6. The Wildcat offense opened up in the second, putting up 18 points in the quarter, behind two 3-pointers from Kalen Barefield.
Yorktown took a 24-16 lead heading into halftime. To start the third quarter, Nordheim went on 10-0 run, led by Deric Torres and Farmer, to give them the lead 26-24. After a cold spell to start the second half, Yorktown got their first bucket with 1:45 remaining in the quarter. Headed to the fourth quarter the game was tied at 28 apiece. Going down the stretch the Wildcats and Pirates traded buckets, going back and forth.
With 1:15 remaining, Nordheim took the lead behind a huge 3-pointer from Torres to put the Pirates up by three. Torres led the game in scoring with 17 points. The Wildcat defense forced some stops that gave them a chance at the buzzer but were unable to capitalize. Nordheim took the victory 40-37. Josh Garcia led the Wildcats in scoring with 11 points. Yorktown will face Luling in Luling, Monday Nov. 25, and return home Tuesday, Nov 26, to face the Waelder Wildcats in a battle between Wildcats.
Nordheim will play at Louise (Nov. 25) and Ganado (Dec. 3) over their next two games before hosting the Nordheim tournament Dec. 5-7.
