Entering their first home match of the season, there was definitely some nervous anticipation for Cuero. The Lady Gobblers were scheduled to open their home slate on Aug. 11 against Beeville, but with that canceled, they had a couple more weeks to prepare for their home-opener. With that extra time, including five road matches (3 wins), Cuero was ready to start their home campaign off on the right foot.
Following a tight opening set (25-19) against Marion in the home-opener on Aug. 25, Cuero dominated the next two sets (25-10, 25-10) to earn their fourth win of the season.
“It was a good first [home] win for the girls,” coach Chelsie Lemley said. “I know they were a little bit jittery when we set up for Beeville. We had the game court set up, and they were talking about how ‘I’m so nervous, first home game,’ but Beeville got canceled.”
“I think they came out and played well and executed,” Lemley continued of her team’s performance against Marion. “We finally played with a sense of urgency and finished when we should have.”
Freshman setter Bromli Watson produced a noteworthy performance as the primary setter with senior Peyton Timpone out due to an injury. Watson finished with 18 assists.
