State powerlifting champ

Only three years ago, Jacob Guerrero was undergoing surgery to remove a mass from behind his heart. From there, he had to undergo rehabilitation and missed the end of eighth and didn’t return to school until the start of his freshman year.
Football and basketball were his sports, but coach Bruno Mata soon convinced him to join powerlifting. Now, Guerrero is a state champion, following his decisive win at the state meet on March 27 in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Division 3, 114-pound weight class.
“Once I got past regionals, I knew I had a real good chance at state, because we’re in the hardest region in the state of Texas,” the Yorktown junior said, noting his Region V championship. “It was kind of like up to me what I wanted to do at that point.”
