With a sibling rivalry that’s made its way to their cross country endeavors, Nordheim’s Deric and David Torres have pushed each other to newfound success. They’ll both represent Nordheim ISD at this weekend’s UIL State Cross Country Championships in Round Rock. Eli Julian was the last Nordheim athlete to reach state in cross country in 2015.

Competing since their days in junior high, it was always the goal of both Deric and David to reach the state. Now, that lofty dream has become a reality.

“It means a lot to make it to state,” Deric said, who earned a fifth place finish at regionals this year in 18 minutes and two seconds.

“It’s always been a goal of mine.” Cross country coach Carlton Williams is proud of both Deric and David, knowing first-hand the hard work they’ve put in.

“We really put a lot into it these last couple years, running in July,” Williams said. At state, he hopes they know only compete well but enjoy the moment.

“Just go out there and have fun and enjoy the atmosphere, making it somewhere we haven’t been in awhile,” Williams said.
