In the heart of DeWitt County, anticipation is mounting for a showdown that has spanned close to a century. The Cuero Gobblers and the Yoakum Bulldogs, two Texas high school football forces, are set to clash once more in a rivalry that stretches back through generations. This Friday's game promises to be nothing short of an all out dog fight, with both teams entering the battle with a perfect 2-0 record.

The Bulldogs, led by head coach Bo Robinson, had a convincing first week win over the Industrial Cobras, 36-14. Their follow-up act against Cameron Yoe claimed a 41-20 win.

For Yoakum, this game holds even greater significance as they seek redemption for last year's humbling defeat at the hands of the Gobblers—a 75-6 loss that no doubt stung deep. It's a chance to rewrite the narrative for the Bulldogs and a chance for the Gobblers to once again show their dominance in this rivalry.

According to Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, the Bulldogs have been tagged as one of the dark horses to watch this season noting their exceptional speed and the leadership of head coach Bo Robinson. Key players like Tyjuan Garza, Qyion Williams, and Ty Gordon could make a significant impact. Zach Taylor, a transfer from Del Rio, now takes the reins as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback.

Head coach Jerod Fikac, now in his second season at the helm, is looking to take the Gobblers all the way. Last year, he lead the Gobblers to a 31-4 record, losing to Wimberley in the semis. With their eyes firmly fixed on a return to the state championship, this season's mantra, "Finish It!" says it all.

The stage is set for a classic Texas football showdown under the Friday night lights. Both teams have a storied history, with a combined 73 wins for Cuero, 35 for Yoakum, and 6 hard-fought draws.

The Cuero Gobblers will aim to continue their dominance, while the Yoakum Bulldogs will fight for redemption. The DeWitt County rivalry is more than a game; it's a tradition, a testament to the enduring spirit of Texas high school football. So, get ready for a night of unforgettable football as these two titans collide once more on Friday night at Gobbler Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

As if that’s not enough action for one day — Also happening on Friday is the Golden Champions Celebration event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Cuero Gobblers State Football Championship. Jerry Salcher, along with Beth Feril, Mary Sheppard and Butch Prause, have coordinated the Golden Championships Celebration event to recognize the historic AAA State Champions from 1973 and 1974 and the “winning streak” of 1973-1975. On Friday, Sept. 8, the Golden Championships Celebration will take place, featuring various activities throughout the late afternoon and into the evening, including the Cuero Gobbler football game against the Yoakum Bulldogs. The Celebration will take place at several locations; starting with Cuero High School Cafeteria for the pre-game recognition ceremony at 4 p.m., then moving Gobbler Stadium with pre-game fun for the families until 6:15 p.m. and finishing later that evening at Cuero Municipal Park with fireworks and a victory dance at the Pavilion with entertainment, as well as food and drink trucks.
