Last year, Yorktown Kitty Kat senior runner Brooke “The Machine” Turner placed 3rd in the District 31-2A cross country meet. Since that moment, she has been laser-focused on not letting that happen again, and on Monday, October 11, 2021, that focus paid off as Turner won the district race, held at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. Junior Madison Lemke, in just her first year of cross country, placed 4th in the race, to also qualify for the region cross country meet as an individual.   The Kitty Kats placed 3rd as a team, behind Port Aransas and Kenedy, to also qualify as a team for regionals. Other Kitty Kats: Kaley Lassmann (18th), Carlie Villarreal (20th), Gabi Romans (24th), and Lily Rodriguez (36th).

Turner has medaled in every race, except for regionals, that she’s run the past two years but has never finished first. “It feels great to finally win a race and especially at district!” she said. “Last year, I didn’t think I ran a good district race and so my goal has been to not let that happen again. Also, last year was a letdown because our team didn’t qualify for regionals, so I had to run there by myself. But, this year, we are going back as a team so I’m happy not just for myself but my teammates.”
