The Yorktown Wildcats 2022-23 basketball season has gotten underway. Once again the team is under the direction of Coach Weldon. Yorktown will be competing in 2A District 31 which includes Kenedy, Port Aransas, Woodsboro, Skidmore-Tynan, Refugio, and Three Rivers. The Wildcats have three returning players from last year’s squad and seven new faces.

In their opening preseason game the Wildcats traveled to play an opponent from 1A District 29, Fayetteville. The Wildcats dropped their first game and were defeated 24-60.

Next they took a short trip down the road to play in the Nordheim Tournament. Each of their opponents just happened to be from the same district, 1A District 30. They would go 1-2 in the tournament. Picking up their first win over Runge, 33-17. Their losses would be from Nordheim and Prairie Lea losing 48-49 and 40-45, respectively. Nordheim was a close battle that included going into overtime before being defeated.

Coach Weldon’s comments on the season include, “This year’s group is a defensive team. We are still a work in progress at the moment and are learning a lot game by game.”
