The Yorktown boys basketball team is under new direction this year. Coach J.T. Weldon played basketball in high school at Springlake Earth. While attending Lubbock Christian University, he learned the game while managing for their basketball team for five years. Prior to advancing his career at Yorktown, he was employed at Levelland ISD.

The Wildcat team has managed a 6-4 record for the season so far.  An inexperienced Yorktown team is trying to heed Head Coach Weldon’s philosophy to success, which includes winning the battle of turnovers, rebounds, and paint touches along with getting better every game.

The Wildcat team graduated the majority of their players from last year that advanced to the Area Playoffs. The lone returning starter for the Wildcats is two-time district offensive MVP, Drew Alexander. Other returners include senior CJ Sarmiento and junior Blake Boyd.  New to the team this year are Seth Hahn, Konnor Sullivan, Kalen Barefield, Cade Martin, and Dalton Eckhardt.

The team’s wins include victories over Austwell Tivoli, Fayettville, Nordheim, Rice Consolidated, Industrial, and Skidmore Tynan. Alexander has been the main offensive threat, scoring in the 40s already twice this season. The Wildcats utilize Martin’s height down low, especially defensively. Hahn also has a height advantage over most opponents, while Barefield’s quickness and jumping ability stifles most.

On Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Wildcats traveled to Skidmore for a non-district matchup with the Skidmore-Tynan Wildcats. The leading scorer of the night was Yorktown’s Alexander with 20 points including 8/9 in free throws. Skidmore Tynan relied on their offensive leader, Cheek, who contributed 14 points.
