The Wildcats were quick to score against the Somerville Yeguas in last Friday’s district opener. At 10:07 Dalton Eckhardt would connect with Aidan Nunez on a 17-yard pass to light up the scoreboard, 6-0. Andres Archuleta would tack on the extra point. Not only would the Wildcats score early, but they would score frequently. They would drop three touchdowns in the first period before the Yeguas could blink. Nunez punched in from four yards back and Deagan Mungia would catch a 36-yard pass, while the Yorktown defense shut out Somerville.

It appeared that the game was going the Wildcats way, however, the second period would be an offensive stall for Yorktown. Somerville would answer with a touchdown early in the quarter. At 10:47 they would rush five yards into the endzone. Just before time expired it looked as if Yorktown would score, unfortunately, the ball was fumbled down near the goal line. At halftime, the Wildcats had a two-touchdown lead, 21-7.

The Yeguas would score first during the third to close the gap to within seven points, 21-14. But the Wildcats would respond with their own touchdown. Nunez would pound it in from two yards back for Yorktown, 28-14.

Just as the first quarter seemed to be all about the Wildcats, the last quarter seemed to be all about the Yeguas. Somerville would score on a 53-yard dart down the field with 7:42 remaining in the game, 28-21. With just a little over 4 minutes between the Wildcats and victory, the Yeguas were able to piece together an unexpected comeback.
