Yorktown and Nordheim girls square off again
By Jacob Stock
The Yorktown Kitty Kats and the Nordheim Lady Pirates squared off Friday, Dec. 20. Both teams met just 13 days prior in the Nordheim tournament championship game that Yorktown won, 38-19. The second matchup faired much differently, partly because of the familiarity between the two teams, playing four times over the past two seasons.
“Nordheim is a very well coached team that was ready for us,” Yorktown head coach Val Acree stated. The Lady Pirates hung around all game and battled all four quarters. Nordheim head coach, Randy Castillo, saw several areas that the Lady Pirates improved on since the last meeting with Yorktown.
“Our transition defense was a little better,” he said. “That helped lead us to some stops. We tried to play our game on offense finding what we wanted and got some really good looks.”
The Lady Pirates scored 34 points compared to the 19 scored in the Dec. 7 matchup against Yorktown, but would fall short, 43-34. Sophomore Emagen Styra led the Pirates with 14 points, while fellow sophomore Danielle Wilson added 10 points. The Kitty Kats were led by sophomore Seely Metting’s 25 points and junior Kailey Sinast who scored eight points.
