The Cuero Record

The current state of the Cuero Lady Gobblers track program consists of bundles of youth. Out of the 13 girls that participated in last week’s area meet at Gobbler Stadium, 10 will be returning next season. There are seven freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors, and three seniors that competed.

“We have a bunch of young girls,” head track and field coach Bryan Hood noted. “Our varsity track team is majority freshman. It gives us something to look forward to as we go into the future years.”

One of those seniors is two-time state track finalist Ricquel Joubert who has been a team player from the beginning.

“We had the number three seed in the 400-meter race with Ricki Joubert. She stepped up and performed in the 4x200 which is right before the 400. Her 400 wasn’t what it could be if she hadn’t just run the 4x200, but again she put the team before herself and got that 4x200 relay out to region,” noted Hood.

Joubert ran the opening leg for the Lady Gobblers on their regional qualifying 800-meter relay team. Cydine Johnson, Taryn Gayle, and Mauryana Dasilva also contributed as they took home fourth with a time of 1:46.335.

With not much rest, Joubert would quickly shift her focus to the 400-meter run giving it her all. She finished seventh with a time of 1:03.157.

The 400-meter relay race didn’t go as planned when a hand-off error took Cuero out of the race.

“There were some mistakes, but it’s going to happen especially in relays. That’s just a part of track,” said Hood.

Cuero’s mile relay team of Johnson, Kaitlyn Comiskey, Ta’Kiya Morris, and Madalynn Kroos finished seventh in the race with a time of 4:33.603.

In the individual field events, senior Abbey Dreier cleared 10-feet even in the pole vault to secure a trip to the regional meet placing fourth. Abbey took home second the week prior in the district meet vaulting over 10-6.
