During their game against Kennedy, Cuero’s Arissa Carbonara scored her 1000th career point, and she achieved that as a Junior. She reached this impressive goal while her and her teammates continue their dominant season.

PIRATES CELEBRATE HOMECOMING WEEK WITH A SPLIT

The Pirates split the week with a win on Tuesday against Prairie Lea (65-42) and falling short to Moulton Friday night (20-52). The Lady Pirates fell both nights but we are proud of their effort, playing with only four original team members.

Kitty Kats End First Half of District Play

The Yorktown Kitty Kats Varsity Basketball team ended the first half of District 31-2A play last week, losing on the road to Refugio and at home to Skidmore-Tynan. On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Yorktown traveled to Refugio to take on the Lady Cats, who feature 5’11” junior Bradi Fox-Smith, a center who averages 17.2 points per game.

8th Grade Kitty Kats Win Pettus Championship

The Yorktown Kitty Kat 7th and 8th grade teams competed in the Pettus Junior High Tournament this past weekend with great success. The 7th Grade Kitty Kats placed 3rd in the 7th grade bracket, after losing 2014 to Corpus Christi Wings and defeating Pettus’ 7th Grade, 288. The 8th Grade won the 8th grade bracket by defeating Bloomington’s 8th Grade, 31-8, and then beating Pettus’ 8th grade, 2220, as Kitty Kat 8th grader Palyn Koopmann made a shot at the buzzer for the win. Koopmann and fellow 8th grader Evelyn Merks were named to the All-Tournament team.

Wildcats Host Skidmore Tynan in District Play

The Wildcats hosted Skidmore-Tynan on Friday, January 12. Senior Braiden Silgero would lead Yorktown in scoring as he tallied double digits offensively. The point guard contributed a dozen points for the team. Paul Rodriguez made the best of his playing time. He would come in off the bench late in the fourth quarter and have a highlight performance. With a minute and a half remaining in the game he would be put on the free-throw line. Rodriguez would capitalize by going 1 out of 2. Immediately, the rebound would be kicked out to him on the right side of the court, and he would drain the three-pointer. Rodriguez concluded his scoring by making a low post shot on a buzzer beater off of a rebound to end the game. In less than two minutes he was able to accumulate six points.

Whittington, Longhorns fall to Huskies at Sugar Bowl

The University of Texas football program had an opportunity to complete one of the greatest come-from-behind efforts in college football history, but a fourth-down pass into the end zone was deflected away as the thirdranked Longhorns fell to the second-ranked Washington Huskies, 37-31, in the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs.

Lady Gobbler Aguilar signs with Coastal Bend College

Cuero High School’s Abigail Aguilar has signed to play collegiate softball for Coastal Bend College. As a Lady Gobbler, Aguilar compiled some pretty impressive numbers. She finished with a .369 batting average, 26 RBIs and 23 runs. She also had 6 doubles and 1 triple.

District Gets Underway for the Wildcats

District 31 2A has gotten underway and front runners appear to be Skidmore-Tynan and Kenedy as both teams remain undefeated. This is surprising since the Port Aransas Marlins are ranked 18th in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 2A state poll. District 31 2A consists of Kenedy, Skidmore-Tynan, Port Aransas, Refugio, Three Rivers, Woodsboro, and Yorktown.

The Yorktown Kitty Kats played two district games this past week, winning on the road and losing at home. On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the Kitty Kats resumed District 31-2A action, as they traveled to Three Rivers to take on the Lady Bulldogs.
