The Yorktown Kitty Kat Varsity Basketball team began District 312A play this week, as it traveled to Woodsboro on December 12, 2023, and hosted Port Aransas on December 15. Yorktown played this last week at the Goliad Tournament, only winning one of the five games it played.

The Wildcat Basketball team competed in the George West Tournament Dec. 14-16. Yorktown put another tally mark in the win column, defeating George West’s Junior Varsity. The game was close through the first period (8-4), however that was only momentarily as the Wildcats were able to handedly put away their opposing team rather quickly. By halftime the lead was extended, 26-17. By the end of the game the Wildcats had a dominating win, 58-27.

On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the Kitty Kats traveled to Woodsboro to open play in District 31-2A. Yorktown jumped out to an early 8-1 lead and, after a couple of Woodsboro 3-pointers, held a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Kitty Kats outscored the Lady Eagles to extend their lead to 26-9 at halftime. The second half was a defensive struggle, as Woodsboro outscored Yorktown, 14-12. However, the Kitty Kats still prevailed, 3823. Junior Malayshia Thomas and Nina Villarreal led Yorktown with nine and eight points respectively. Senior DJ Maciel added six points,while junior Laynie Boyd had five. Freshman Kendall Sievers came off the bench to score four key points. Maciel led the Kitty Kats in rebounding with eight, while Boyd had seven. Villarreal had eight steals, while Boyd and junior Madalyn Rowlands had five apiece.

Last Saturday, the University of Texas Longhorns defeated Oklahoma State University to win its first Big 12 Championship since 2009, and former Cuero Fightin’ Gobbler, Jordan Whittington, a Senior wide receiver, is a vital member of the team. Whittington had four receptions for 48-yards as his team not only clinched the Big 12 championship, but punched their ticket to the National Championship playoffs.

Your Lady Gobblers Girls’ Varsity basketball team recently participated in the Navarro Invitational tournament. They battled throughout, winning four games, but fell short, losing to Navarro in the Championship game.

The Nordheim Lady Pirates placed 3rd at the tournament, beating Yorktown JV and then falling to Three Rivers on Friday, but earning them a spot Saturday where they battled Runge for 3rd place with a win.

The Pirates finished 2nd in the tournament, beating both Pawnee and Yorktown Varsity Friday night and putting up a good fight against Bloomington, but falling short in the championship game..

The Yorktown Wildcat Varsity and Kitty Kat Varsity and JV Basketball teams were in tournament play this past week. The Kitty Kat Varsity played in the Karnes City Tournament.

The Wildcat basketball team faced the Stockdale Brahmas in an away game at the start of the week. They came up short, 57-28. Later in the week, they participated in their first tournament of the season in Nordheim. They won their first matchup against Runge before being challenged with playing the Nordheim Pirates.

Your Cuero Fightin’ Gobblers’ 2023 season came to an unfortunate end last Friday afternoon at Freedom Field in Rosharon, Texas. The Gobblers fought hard but ran into a team on a hot streak and fell to Jasper, 28-7.
