Voter registration deadline for primary approaches

The deadline to register to vote in the Texas Democratic and Republican primary elections is Feb. 5. Voters on March 5 will choose their nominees for president, U.S. Senator, all 38 U.S. House members from Texas, and a number of other state and local offices, from the Texas Supreme Court to district attorneys, sheriffs and county commissioners.

To the Editor: Three years ago, we all witnessed a violent mob descend on the Capitol, costing people their lives, because one man—Donald Trump—spread lies about a ‘stolen’ election. The January 6 insurrection was an attack on our democracy and our freedom to vote.

Spate of new laws effective Jan. 1

After the Texas Legislature spent much of 2023 in session, a bevy of new laws go into effect on New Year’s Day, though some have been delayed by lawsuits challenging their constitutionality. The Austin American- Statesman reported on SB 17, a new law that institutes a ban on programs and policies “designed or implemented in reference to race, color, or ethnicity” at Texas public universities or colleges — commonly known as diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI.

Letter to the Cuero Record Editor, As 2023 comes to a close, on behalf of Cuero City Council and the City of Cuero, we thank the many people responsible for two massive holiday events, Christmas in Downtown and Christmas in the Park. Christmas in Downtown brought many families into our Historic District for a wonderful weekend of fun, frolic, and shopping—carriage rides, petting zoo, ice skating, toboggan tunnel, axe throwing, farmers’ market and more! Santa showed up as did the Tall Dancers.

Legal groups sue to stop new immigration law

The ink was barely dry on a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott that makes unauthorized entry into the United States a state crime before a lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and El Paso County challenging its constitutionality. The Austin American-Statesman reported the suit was filed in an Austin federal court by the ACLU and two immigrant advocacy groups on behalf of the county.

The festive spirit that illuminated our historic streets on December 8th and 9th was truly magical, and it wouldn't have been possible without the support and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

Cuero Regional Hospital Donates to local students The Cuero ISD Student Services department would like to thank Cuero Regional Hospital for their selfless donation of canned goods and snacks for Cuero ISD students in need. These items allow students to take home food bags for the weekend over the next four months, ensuring no student goes hungry on non-school days. A special thank you goes out to Tamara Kainer for coordinating the event and serving as our School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) secretary.

Property tax cuts go into effect

A total of $18 billion in property tax cuts were approved by more than 80% of voters in the November general election and should be reflected in property tax bills that are due by Jan. 31. The cuts come in the form of increased home exemptions, lower school district rates, and limiting the amount property appraisals can rise.
