With the temperature in the mid-‘70s and a nice beautiful sunny day this past Saturday, March 26, it could not have been a better day to play some golf.

With the excitement level and competition level as high as ever, the 2022 Jackpot Golf Tournament was held at Cuero Municipal Golf Course on Saturday.

“This is probably one of the best tournaments of the year because it rewards all the players that have played throughout the season,” said Russell Goebel. “Our first year we had 11 teams, now we are up to 20.”

The season takes place from March to October and consists of a total of 38 Thursdays. The objective is to participate in the Thursday “Fun After 5” scramble to receive points for your finish and play that will help you qualify for the granddaddy of them all, the annual Jackpot Tournament.

“Because you play every Thursday, it’s better for a lot of people to just join the golf course and get a membership. Six years ago we had 80-90 members, today there are over 190,” said Goebel.

On Saturday, the top 100 golfers from last season were unleashed to compete in the one-day 18 hole scramble formatted tournament.

“I would say 75-80% of the golfers are from Cuero. We pull a few golfers in from Victoria, Yorktown and Yoakum,” mentioned Goebel.

The field, ranging in all ages from 21-to 80, was divided into 20 teams, with five players on each team. Each player ranges from A-E caliber with the teams consisting of one of each player.

“One of the most fun things about it is you don’t know your team till the day before. We hold a draft that will make your five-man team. Everyone is fun to play with, they know they are all in it for the right way,” said Goebel.
