Cowboy Claus, originally known as Yorktown Blue Santa, was started by the Yorktown Western Days Association over 20 years ago. The association worked with local law enforcement to provide gifts for families in need. When the law enforcement was moved to county patrol, the name was changed five years ago in order to avoid confusion. Cowboy Claus covers families living in Yorktown or Nordheim, while Deputy Santa, run by the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, donates to families living in the county but not in town.

Cowboy Claus helps insure that the youth of the community are able to share in the joys of receiving Christmas treasures even if their current situation wouldn’t allow it without this program. Funds primarily come from donations, but on the weekend of Western Days an auction is held; the funds raised from that auction goes toward Wagon Wheel Charities, and Cowboy Claus is one of those charities.

This year, gift giving will likely be a lot more expensive due to inflation and supply chain issues. Kristin Gibson, Yorktown Western Days Association Director, believes that this year they will see more families needing the program. “The cost of everything is going up drastically. I am sure we will an increase in applicants.”
