Dylan Respondek and Brooke Turner, 2022 honor graduates of Yorktown High School received news that they both had passed the College Board exam for Advanced Placement Calculus AB, earning them college credit. Their scores were above the national and state average.

Yorktown HS started offering Algebra I to 8th graders in 2019-20 so students would be prepared to take AP Calculus as seniors. Dylan and Brooke actually doubled up on maths their sophomore year, taking Honors Algebra II and Honors Geometry concurrently. College Board Advanced Placement is yet another avenue for students gifted in mathematics to be served at Yorktown. Students scoring well on the exam earn college credit, thus saving money on college tuition. The College Board offers 38 AP courses. Currently, Advanced Placement Calculus AB is the only course offered at Yorktown, taught by Jeanne Peterson.

Dylan is the son of Joe and Danette Respondek. He plans to continue his education at Navarro College in Corsicana. Dylan values and appreciates the help of his teacher who played an integral role in helping his scores stand out and flourish.

“I had a really good teacher, she did a really good job,” said Respondek on Mrs. Peterson. “It’s just a lot of repetition getting everything memorized.”

The time invested during high school will now help Respondek concentrate his time somewhere else beneficial.

“It helped out because I don’t have to take a math class in college now, so I have the free time to either study another topic or do better in other college classes,” explained Respondek who will be joining the John Deere Ag Tech program there at Navarro College.

Brooke is the daughter of Shane and Jill Turner. She plans to pursue higher education at the University of Texas at San Antonio majoring in mathematics.
