Yorktown City Council Meeting highlights

The Yorktown City Council held a special meeting on August 16, at 6 p.m. at Yorktown City Hall. All council members were in attendance and the meeting highlights are as follows: Citizen Jennifer Magnon spoke before the council during the Citizens Comments portion of the meeting. Magnon was inquiring about the city code enforcer and enforcement of the City Ordinances. She was advised that she would be contacted with the requested information.

DeWitt County Vietnam Veterans of America are sponsoring scholarships available to High School senior- level graduating students. This includes homeschooled students who meet certain requirements. They will be awarding five $1000 scholarships to applicants of the Class of 2024. The deadline for completing the applications is April 5, 2024 and can be turned into your high school guidance counselor or principals office Or they can be mailed to DCVVA, PO Box 424, Yorktown, TX 78164. An essay question on the US Constitution is part of the application. Applications can be obtained through High school counselors and The Cuero Record and Yorktown News-View offices.

1st Bell Award Essay of 2023

Every year, the top 10 students are eligible to honor a Cuero ISD teacher who has impacted them at some point in their educational career during the annual Bell Ceremony. In addition to these 10 students, an 11th is chosen to participate from the group of submissions.

Hands down, the Cuero Chamber of Commerce provided a winning hand with their annual World Series of Cuero Texas Hold’em Tournament, as well as Shoppers Poker Run and Casino Night, on Saturday, Aug. 5. Taking place at The Venue on Church Street in downtown Cuero, this event was an unforgettable showcase of talent, fierce competition, and the chance to claim prestigious titles and extraordinary prizes.

Texas approves first-ever regional flood plans

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved the first-ever regional flood plans during the July Board meeting, marking a historic milestone in the state’s efforts to reduce the risk and impact of flooding. The regional flood plans will lay the foundation for Texas’ first state flood plan, which is due to the legislature in September 2024.
