The Yorktown football team traveled to Weimar on Friday, Sept. 2, with thoughts of snatching their first win of the season. A lightning delay pushed the start time back until 8 p.m. Still drizzling the game got underway with Yorktown kicking off to Weimar. The Weimar team was on the 26-yard line and gained three on their opening play. Philip Yretsky was first on the play with a tackle for a loss. The next play would be another loss for the Weimar Wildcats but this time it was dealt by Landon Wilkes. After forcing Weimar to punt Yorktown was in good field position getting the ball on the 50.

The opening drive for the Wildcats started with a handoff by quarterback Dalton Eckhardt to Deagan Mungia who rushed for six yards.  Aidan Nunez would gain one yard before the Eckhardt and Mungia team would get six yards and a first down.

Next, there was a loss in the backfield when Mungia was brought down on the 43-yard line. Nunez was met at the line and tackled for no gain.  On third down a pass to running back, Gabe Latta almost went for a touchdown as he was brought down just short on the five-yard line.  Weimar would call a time-out. A pitch to the left side to Latta gained a yard and a handoff to Nunez scored on a four-yard rush. The Yorktown Wildcats would draw first blood in the catfight. Andres Archuleta’s kick would sail through the uprights bringing the score to 7-0 with 6:34 left in the first quarter.

A block in the back pushed Weimar back to the nine-yard line to start their second series. Wilkes blew up the quarterback with a sack. Methodically the Weimar Wildcats rushed almost the complete distance of the field. Starting on the nine-yard line and ending in a touchdown with 1:01 left in the first period. A fake field goal attempt and trying for two-point failed allowing Yorktown to maintain the lead, 7-6.

A fumble on the kickoff turned the ball over on the 32-yard line and gave possession to Weimar. Their offense was able to break loose for a gain of twenty with 36 seconds remaining. A holding call pushed Weimar to the 22 yard line with 23 seconds left in play. A the start of the second period, Mathew Olguin broke up a touchdown pass to make it third down for Weimar. With a slew of defenders chasing the quarterback, a pass was broken up by Mungia. The ball went over on downs.

The Yorktown Wildcats would end up punting. A block in the back by Weimar gave them a long field to go in order to score. They would not make a first down and would punt to Yorktown. A bad snap forced the Weimar punter to scramble for a first down. He went several yards before being brought down on the 25.  Eckhardt would score on the first play with a 25-yard quarterback keeper. Archuleta tacked on the extra point, 14-6.

With 56 seconds remaining and with the Weimar football team on the 16-yard line they would go for it on fourth down. The strong Yorktown defense would stop them. The Wildcats would throw a pass to the intended receiver Aydan Joe but it would be incomplete. The Wildcats headed to the locker room winning, 6-14.

A face mask call brought the Yorktown squad to midfield to start the second half. Unfortunately, the Wildcats didn’t get a first down before punting. During the third period with 3:26 left on the clock, Weimar would score again on the ground. They would once again go for the two-point conversion but again find themselves unsuccessful as a Yorktown defender made a tackle in the backfield.

With the score 14-12, Nunez would punch it in from the two-yard line to start the fourth, 20-12. The Wildcats would miss their extra point attempt. With 11:53 left in the game, it appears the lead would be insurmountable for Weimar since their run defense takes up valuable time off the clock, but instead the fans were in for an exciting and thrilling end.
