Yoakum ISD asks voters to approve ‘golden pennies’
The Yoakum Independent School District is having a Voter Approved Tax Revenue Election (VATRE) election, which will appear on the November ballot of DeWitt County voting precincts 201, 202, 203 & 204.

New dogs in town
The Cuero Chamber of Commerce welcomed Dog Gon’it Grooming at 207 Esplanade to town with a ribbon cutting on October 8. Owners Farah and Paul Sanchez, center, have a grooming shop in Gonzales, but their friend Guy Dolan, behind Paul, encouraged them to come to Cuero as well. The shop will soon open for business, but appointments can be scheduled at 210-929-3177.

Court limits spending by Precinct 1 Constable
At their regular meeting on Monday, DeWitt County Commissioners limited the spending by Precinct 1 Constable Kelly Phelps, who will leave office on December 31, to 25% of the budgeted funds for that office.

American Legion Post #369 to place flags on veteran graves
The Mueller-Schaffner American Legion Post #369 of Westhoff, Texas met on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 6:30 pm for a delicious pot luck meal followed by a 7:00 pm meeting presided by Terri Boothe. Old minutes and financials were reviewed and approved. Kristye Kahlich gave a historical report from the 1962 minutes which included information of planning of many food items for Sausage Feast with 1000 plates to be sold. Very interesting!

Boyd Crowned Homecoming Queen
At halftime of the Yorktown versus Pettus game, the 2024 homecoming court was announced. Freshman Duchess Taylor Gips was escorted by Randen Zuniga, Sophomore Duchess Alondra Davila was escorted by Lupe Joe Rios Jr., and Junior Duchess Serenity Rodriguez was escorted by Colton Rogers.

Family friendly Western Days opens Friday
The 66th Annual Western Days Festival, scheduled from Friday, Oct. 18, to Sunday, Oct. 20, in Yorktown showcases small-town culture with events like a pig scramble and corn hole tournament. But there’s also free wall-to-wall music along with Oletime Gunfighters. And, of course, a carnival.
