He especially urged community leaders to step up and have open conversations about the critical importance of mental health, reminding us that we’re all in this together.

Undefeated and then some: 1974 season established Cuero’s dynasty
Last week we included the description of Coach Gilbreath’s first two years with the Gobblers. In addition to arduous off-season training, Gilbreath “resolved to field the very best athletes – period. It didn’t matter the color of your skin, whether your parents were employees of the school, whether your father was the mayor or president of the school board - if an athlete came in with the proper attitude, had sufficient knowledge of the game, was physically up to the challenges of his program, and was willing to contribute as a team player, he could be a starter.”

Brush up on volume formula to get correct amount of hay
Because most of this region received substantial rainfall in June, July, and August, hay supplies in this part of the state are as good as it’s been in a while. However, September has been hot and dry so far and we all know that winter is just around the corner, so folks should soon be making plans for supplemental hay feeding. While a lot of cattle producers put up their own hay supply, many rely solely on buying hay to fill that need.

McLeods to the rescue: Couple helps Opal the sheep dog
Recently some longtime Pet Adoptions of Cuero supporters, Milt and Kathy McLeod arrived at the Highway 183 shelter with a lovely dog. It had obviously been abandoned on an out of town country road. Unfortunately this is becoming the norm across the state – dogs, puppies, kittens – all dumped on country roads with no chance of survival unless a compassionate human happens to discover them.

The Cuero Record Devotional Page
What is hope? According to Webster’s dictionary hope is defined as: ‘a feeling that what is wanted is likely to happen; desire accompanied by expectation…’ There are many people in this world today that are going through times of hopelessness and allow this to take them into a time of despair. Many have found difficult times, whether it be financially, physically, facing the unknown about certain situations such as employment, sickness and/or impending death of a loved one, etc., and it affects them health wise, mentally, and socially. Not only does it affect them, but it affects the ones around them and the ones they depend on most such as family and close friends.

How well do you know your history?
Which DeWitt County resident’s grandfather signed the U S Declaration of Independence? Who saved the land grant titles from Stephen F Austin’s Colony? Whose grandfather was a privateer during the American Revolution? Whose father went on surveying trips with George Washington? Whose father fought in the War of 1812 under Andrew Jackson in New Orleans? Whose home in DeWitt County was a refuge for settlers during Indian attacks? What 15-year old left the Alamo the day before it fell with a message for Col Fannin? What Alamo defender has a Dewitt County creek named for him? What 15-year-old fought in almost every battle except the Alamo. In whose home was the first DeWitt County commissioners court held? Who operated a ferry across the Guadalupe and wanted the county seat to be near it? Who was the first teacher in DeWitt County?
