Special meeting set for tax, budget
The county tax appraisal roll, tax rate and budget will be addressed at a special Commissioners Court meeting on Wednesday, July 31, at 9 a.m. According to County Judge Daryl Fowler the growth in the tax base suggests a reduction in the tax rate.

As temperatures rise, risk of heatstroke and death increase for children left in vehicles
Every summer, children get heatstroke or die as a result of being left unattended in a hot car, but a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service safety expert says there are ways to avoid tragedy. Cindy Kovar, AgriLife Extension program manager for Silver Drivers Safe Texans, said the first thing to remember is that as temperatures increase, so does the likelihood of heatstroke and death for any child left in a vehicle.

State water conference to confront supply, flood issues
A biennial Water for Texas conference is scheduled for Jan. 27-29, 2025, in Austin at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center to consider water issues impacting the state. Hosted by the Texas Water Development Board, registration for the conference is now open.

Training, hurricanes and budget preparation top July
Currently into month number two of my tenure as Mayor of Cuero, to say I have been busy would be an understatement. Councilmen Hensen, Arroyo and I attended The Texas Municipal League (TML) training for new Mayors and Councilmembers in San Antonio July 18 and 19.

Wanted: GC for Graves rebuild
The shoring steel on the Graves Building in Downtown Cuero may soon come down if a general contractor signs on, according to Architexas Senior Associate Nicholas Melde. “The priority is to remove the temporary steel shoring from Main Street as soon as possible,” Melde said in a recent email.

School Board sets transfer agreement, parents urged to check dress code
Cuero ISD school board members approved the new transfer agreement, which is a memorandum of understanding (MOU), at the regular meeting on July 18. The new agreement does not affect fall enrollment, but it will impact the spring enrollment, according to Dr. Micah Dyer, CISD superintendent.

Students in Washington
Students from DeWitt County sit on the sculpture of Albert Einstein at the museum dedicated to him in Washington D.C. They traveled on the annual D.C. trip with staff from Yorktown High School. Any 8th grade student in DeWitt County can go on the trip. See Part 1 of this year’s trip on Page ? (Contributed Photo) From June 1 to June 7, 2024, 17 Yorktown students, parents, a grandparent and a teacher were part of an educational tour of Washington, DC, along with a group from Cuero Junior High. The group was led by Sean Douglas, a teacher in Cuero, and Coach Val Acree, a teacher and coach in Yorktown. This is the third straight year that students from Yorktown have attended this trip through WorldStrides.

To encourage networking for Chamber members this summer, The Cuero Chamber of Commerce is hosting a mixer at Cuero Country Club on Wednesday, July 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with the theme “Bingo, Burgers & Beer.” Tickets for Cuero Chamber members are $25 each and non-members may attend with a $30 ticket. This mixer will include great networking, drinks (including cold beer), delicious burgers and bingo at the Cuero Country Club Grille. The Yorktown High School Class of 1963 held their 61st year reunion June 22, 2024, at the 5D Steakhouse in Yorktown at 11 a.m. Forty-one classmates, spouses, and guests attended the event.
