County spared effects of Beryl
As of press time, the bands of Hurricane Beryl are barely brushing through DeWitt County. The western side of the storm is seeing little rainfall, but this was not known over the weekend as county leaders made decisions about public meetings.

Exotic animals visit kiddos at library
Dylan McDaniel has been working with animals all his life and doing shows with them for five years. On July 3rd, McDaniel from Wild Things Zoofari brought six of his animals to show at the Yorktown Public Library.

Local home health service helps patients heal, avoid hospital
When the regional hospital shut down its home health services, a Cuero physical therapist and business owner bridged that healthcare gap when he purchased Cuero Home Health. “I wanted people to be able to continue to have those services here locally and find a way to make that happen,” Jay Babcock said.

Out with old, in with new
While the city is turning junk into bucks with its new GovDeals account, its purchase of a Kubota excavator will pay dividends in proper repairs for years to come, according to Mayor Bill Baker. Throughout the regular meeting of the Yorktown City Council on June 24, references were made to the ways a new excavator will benefit the city.

Grants of up to $50,000 available to nonprofits, first responders
AUSTIN, Texas – The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) will accept applications in July for community grants of up to $50,000. Eligible projects include improvements to fire stations, community centers, sports fields, libraries and other facilities, as well as providing updated gear and equipment for emergency responders.

Westhoff American Legion holds meeting
The Westhoff American Legion Post 369, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion met on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 7 pm at St John Lutheran Church Parish Hall. Items discussed included future Legion hall rentals, future meeting dates, and historical information. Also, 129 flags were placed at 4 cemeteries in Westhoff for Memorial Day. There were 6 members who helped with this project. Patriotism awards were presented to two Westhoff School students, Carter Collins and Amy Gallaga, at the school commencement ceremony on May 23, 2024. Pastor Jan Putman has been working on a Facebook page for the Legion and his work is appreciated. Kristye Kahlich presented patriotic bags that will be distributed to homebound members for a Fourth of July project.

Teacher arrested on charge of improper relationship
First year teacher at Nordheim ISD, Jacob Catron, was arrested on May 15 by DeWitt County Sheriff’s office on charges of an improper relationship with a student. “We received a complaint of an improper relationship between a student and a teacher, investigated and found probable cause to believe it had occurred,” DeWitt County Sheriff Carl Bowen said.

COVID closes Cuero store temporarily
The COVID-19 virus caught up with six employees of Alamo Lumber in early June, which was roughly half their employees, according to Manager Steve Kolhoff. “The store had to close for half a day,” he said.
