State water conference to confront supply, flood issues
A biennial Water for Texas conference is scheduled for Jan. 27-29, 2025, in Austin at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center to consider water issues impacting the state. Hosted by the Texas Water Development Board, registration for the conference is now open.

As temperatures rise, risk of heatstroke and death increase for children left in vehicles
Every summer, children get heatstroke or die as a result of being left unattended in a hot car, but a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service safety expert says there are ways to avoid tragedy. Cindy Kovar, AgriLife Extension program manager for Silver Drivers Safe Texans, said the first thing to remember is that as temperatures increase, so does the likelihood of heatstroke and death for any child left in a vehicle.

County keeps the heat off jail
Commissioners approved requests from the sheriff’s office for jail operations and received budget requests from foster care agencies at the rescheduled meeting of the DeWitt County Commissioner’s Court, The regular meeting on July 12 was originally scheduled for Monday, July 8, but was postponed because of Hurricane Beryl’s imminent landfall.

County’s foster kids need volunteer advocates
DeWitt County currently has 24 children in crisis from 15 families, according to Diana Sneed, program director for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Golden Crescent. “Six of those children do not have a volunteer (advocate,)” Sneed said as she updated the Commissioner’s Court on CASA’s status in DeWitt County before submitting her budget request.

Yorktown students travel through history
From June 1 to June 7, 2024, 17 Yorktown students, parents, a grandparent and a teacher were part of an educational tour of Washington, DC, along with a group from Cuero Junior High. The group was led by Sean Douglas, a teacher in Cuero, and Coach Val Acree, a teacher and coach in Yorktown. This is the third straight year that students from Yorktown have attended this trip through WorldStrides.

New entrepreneurs
Main Street welcomed new entrepreneurs Riley Dickens, left, and Nathan Taylor, right, who made up batches of Hawaiian Punch and lemonade for sale next to the Bohnhof Cafe. Cuero Regional Hospital will be hosting a blood drive for the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in the Education Classroom on Thursday, July 18th, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Anyone who is 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood.

Meyersville board reaches out to Cuero trustees on transfer agreement
With furniture lining the hallways while classrooms are under construction, the Meyersville ISD board held their regular meeting July 9 with two members of the public in attendance. The board discussed a number of issues, including the preliminary budget and the proposed transfer agreement with Cuero ISD.

City hears HOTS requests, approves judges
Cuero City Council Highlights Community groups appeared before the Cuero City Council during its regular meeting on July 8 to request funds from the Hotel Motel Tax Fund. In other business, council approved three zoning ordinances as well as two municipal judges.
