CORRECTION
In a story about “Residents call for action on dangerous dogs” in the September 4 edition, Carla Sullivan was misquoted. She suggested that the city call the City of Cuero to inquire about hiring one of its Animal Control officers, her husband, when not working for Cuero.

Nordheim Volleyball
The Lady Pirates hosted their tournament on Aug. 30-31, finishing 3rd with only one loss to VCA on day two in a hard fought match. The Lady Pirates finished Day 1 with two wins against Pettus and VCA. They played for 3rd place and beat A-T in their final game. All-tournament honors went to Senior Abby Klein and Junior Vanessa Lopez.

Hermann Sons Life Yorktown School of Dance is open for registration, now through October 1st. Not a member? Not a problem! New this year – the dance program is open to members and non-members! As always, members (policyholders) will continue to receive a discounted rate for classes while non-members will pay an additional registration fee. The 2024-2025 dance program is available to youth 3 to 17 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2024. We will be having a local Parent Meeting at the Hermann Sons Life Yorktown Lodge at 225 N. Wildcats fall in season opener, show promise in 2nd half
On Friday, Aug. 30 the varsity football team traveled for their first game of the season to play against the Karnes City Badgers. The end result was a 36-14 loss for the Yorktown squad. The second half showed promise for the Wildcats.

Yorktown scheduled to play Skidmore-Tynan on Friday 13th
Skidmore-Tynan were 4-6 last season and are in 2A Division I - District 16 with Freer, Premont, Refugio, Riviera-Kaufer, Santa Maria, and Three Rivers. The Bobcats started the season with two losses to both Natalia (28-18) and Kenedy (34-16).

County approves interlocal agreement
The Commissioners Court re-approved the interlocal agreement between DeWitt County and the City of Yorktown for 24-hour law enforcement services at its regular meeting on September 9. The City of Yorktown pays $262,500.00 per year ($21,875.00 monthly) for law enforcement services through the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.

Hall of Honor Inductee
Roger and Arleen Weisey sport T-shirts from their grandson in Japan, who sent souvenirs with writing that means grandpa and grandma. Roger will be inducted into the Houston Area Fast Pitch Hall of Honor on November 16 along with three teammates from Yoakum. His team went to nationals three times, and he played tournament fastpitch until he was 65 years old. Through Arleen, Roger settled in DeWitt County and helped the Lady Gobbler softball team start their program. STAFF PHOTO

Judicial candidates gather for meet and greet
On Wednesday Sept. 11th, the DeWitt/LaVaca County Democratic Women will host a meet and greet for candidates for the District 13 Court of Appeals from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at “Millie’s on Main” at 115 E. Main in Cuero. District 13 serves thirteen counties along the Texas coast from Matagorda County to Cameron County. The public is invited to meet the following Democratic candidates: Justice Gina Benavides, currently the senior justice serving on the Court of Appeals, is running to fill the open position of Chief Justice. Justice Benavides is a graduate of the University of Houston School of Law. Gina is active within her community of McAllen. She and her husband count their eight grandchildren as the light of their lives.

Going back into my archives I pulled up a story that had slipped my memory for many years. Someone had sent me an email about a young child traveling with his mother down the interstate. It was raining at a steady pace and the windshield wipers were working great moving the rain away.

Tommy J. Rogers
Tommy J. Rogers, 93, of Cuero passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2024. He was born March 25, 1931 in Hearne to Thomas and Ollie Rogers. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Bernice Laverne Piske on October 10, 1961. Tommy enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, gun sports and reloading. He was a full time cowboy and he loved the Lord.

Hunt holds a pep rally for kindness
Hunt Elementary held an Anti-bullying Pep Rally on August 27 with visitors from the Cuero High School Band, Varsity Football, Cheerleaders and Trotters. Three varsity players, Conner Kubesch, Cash Cooper and Hayden Carter, shared about treating people how you want to be treated - with kindness.

Yorktown residents calling for action on dangerous dogs
At least 10 citizens attended the Aug. 26 Yorktown City Council meeting to voice concern over a roaming pack of dogs, preying on cats and small animals. On Saturday, July 20, a pack of dogs went on a spree throughout town, viciously killing pet cats, according to Kristen Schustereit.
