Family loses home in fire
A tragic fire broke out at 834 Metting School Rd. in Yorktown on March 24, resulting in the complete loss of the home. Manpower was limited, despite the response from multiple agencies. The Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Nordheim Fire Department (FD), Cuero FD, Cuero VFD, and Westhoff FD all contributed to the ef- forts, along with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office. Crews from Commissioners Ryan Varela’s Precinct 1 and James Kaiser’s Precinct 3, along with Yorktown and Cuero EMS, were also on site. 04/02/2025 12:26 PM

Guerrero brings home the Gold
Yorktown senior Johnathan Guerrero brought home a state championship as he won the 132 pound weight class at the State Powerlifting Championship in Abilene, Texas on March 22, 2025. Guerrero won in dominating fashion, as he broke the state record in squat (555 pounds) and tied the deadlift record (500 pounds). BATON ROUGE Jeanette Yusko of Cuero, Texas, was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at University of Houston-Victoria. Vicki Harmon Barnes, 88, of Cuero passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2025. She was born May 2, 1936 in Newcastle, TX to Eugene and Nora Collins Harmon. She worked for Texas Electric Company in Monahans, TX as a customer service representative for twenty years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cuero and loved her church family. She kept close tabs on all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved getting new pictures from them. She enjoyed living in the country and never met a dog she didn’t like! Kathy Lou Aschenbeck, 68, of Victoria went to be with Jesus on Saturday, March 15, 2025. She was born December 20, 1956 in San Antonio to Ernest and Mabel McBride Denson. She married Darrell Aschenbeck on August 6, 1976 in Cuero. She was a sales associate for Ashley Furniture in Victoria. Some of her treasured accomplishments were homeschooling her son and being a great sales person.
