Who was Willie Dinter?
Cuero was a small town of around 4,000 in April of 1917 when the United States officially entered World War 1, or the Great War. While the world was fighting against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empires, young men and women were enlisting or being inducted into military duty here in the States.

Lady Gobblers fall to Tigers
The Lady Gobblers beat Austin St. Michael in 4 sets on Oct. 29, but came up short for the second time this season against the Goliad Tigers Friday with a 3-0 loss. However, according to MaxPreps, each set they played they increased their score, 25-12, 25-18, and 2522.

Helping Hands
WWII veteran H. L. Bammert, of Weesatche, received one of the lap quilts given to veterans at September’s Day in the Country, sponsored by Weesatche 4 Warriors. The 10th annual event honored veterans, active duty military and first responders with Chuck Wagon meals and live entertainment. So far this year Weesatche 4 Warriors has raised $43,000 to benefit local veterans. In September they donated funds to DeWitt County Vietnam Veterans, DeWitt County Cares, and Yorktown EMS.

Gobblers soar past Mustangs, clinch playoff berth
The Cuero Gobblers passing attack and physical defense was too much for the Ingleside Mustangs last Friday night. The Gobblers defeated the Mustangs 40-14 on Parent’s Night to clinch a playoff berth.

My brother loaned me a book and told me to read it, which I did. It was written by a Vietnam POW and he told of the torture and struggles the POW’s endured and went through while in captivity. It not only told of the pain and punishment the POW’s went through it also told about what his wife and children faced while he was confined.

Wilbert “Will” Henry Sauermilch
Wilbert “Will” Henry Sauermilch, 93, passed away at home in Victoria on October 29, 2024. He was born in Yorktown on April 1, 1931, to Albert and Agnes (Sager) Sauermilch. Will graduated Salutatorian from Yorktown High School in 1949. He attended Texas Lutheran College (TLC) in Seguin, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. Will was honored to be in the first group to attend one of TLC’s four-year degree programs. Upon graduation, Will enlisted in the US Navy and completed Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. He was stationed in Long Beach, CA and served as Lieutenant JG on the USS Bremerton during the Korean War. Will was honorably discharged in 1956 and served in the Naval Reserve until 1963.

13th Naming of the Tree
The latest elderly oak to be named in Cuero honors the Gossett Family. Located by the Cuero Ful-o-Pep Plant, the naming ceremony occurred on November 1. The Gossett family has carried on the long tradition of providing quality animal feed for Texas livestock.
