Property values increase by almost $1 billion
Virginia S. Gilstrap, reporter/ managing editor The overall property values in DeWitt County increased by 10% this year, so the county tax rate will likely decrease by about 10%, County Judge Daryl Fowler said at a special meeting of the Commissioners Court on July 31.

Preserving peaches at their peak
Even though August is slated as National Peach Month, peaches can be enjoyed year-round as can many fruits and vegetables. In season just means it is time to enjoy them at their peak ripeness. Depending on the variety, peaches are usually harvested from late June to late August, in Texas. So, whether you are picking from a tree in your backyard, or off the shelf at your favorite grocery store or farmers market, don’t be afraid to buy in bulk when you find a good sale. You can put the extras up by freezing or canning to enjoy year-round. You can call the Extension office to get recipes for preserving your harvest. Fruit usually goes on sale when it is in season, so buying at this time will save you money and you can freeze the rest for year-round enjoyment.

Pattern of abuse still found at Texas juvenile facilities
A federal investigation into five state facilities concluded children in custody face excessive force, sexual abuse and a lack of vital services, The Dallas Morning News reported. At a news conference last week, Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s civil rights division, said children held in those facilities are not receiving the treatment and rehabilitation they are supposed to get.

SA exhibit based on local author’s book
Historian Cynthia Orozco graduated from Cuero High School in 1976, but when she went to UT Austin for college, her true education and life’s work began. “It was my first exposure to Mexican American history,” she said in an interview at the Cuero library.

Is your life a life of contentment? If someone came to you and ask, “Are you a contented person?” What would you say? There are many people in this world today that would say, I have everything that I ever wanted.” There are also many people in this world today that would say, “The Lord has given me everything that I have ever needed.” Does this mean that the Lord has provided everything that I desired or just allowed me to have what I need to get by? The Apostle Paul, when writing to the Philippians, stated in 4:12; “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” How many of us in this modern-day world can say, “Thank you Lord for what you have provided and allowed me to have.” How many of us are content in our situations whether they be bad or good? How many of us praise the Lord God in our time of fulfillment and in our time of despair? So many of us go through this world today saying, “I wish I could or wish I had…?” It seems that most of us look at what we don’t have instead of being thankful and appreciative of what we do have.

Emilio Saenz Jr.
Emilio Saenz Jr., 84, of Cuero passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was born June 13, 1940 in Nordheim to Emilio Sr. and Rosa Vega Saenz. Emilio proudly served in the United States Army. He married Dolores Uresti on October 15, 1966 in Cuero. Many people would drop off projects to have him work on, as he was a well-known welder in the community. Emilio enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting with his friends underneath the shade tree at his shop, and loved pickled pig’s feet.
