Karen Elaine Lewis
Karen Elaine Lewis, 75, of Cuero passed away Friday, January 10, 2025. She was born June 20, 1949 in Beaumont to Woodrow Copeland and Elaine Bond. She married Joseph “Jay” Lewis in June of 1990 in Tyler. Kay proudly held the title of first female president for the Cuero Lions Club. She was the co-founder of Christmas in the Park and the December Events Committee.

Joan Vernell Gohmert
Joan Vernell Gohmert, 95 of Meyersville, passed away peacefully into the arms of our savior on January 10, 2025. Joan was born on October 12, 1929 in Dewitt County to Edwin and Cora Wendel Egg. She married Charles Gohmert on October 9, 1948 in Meyersville at St. John Lutheran Church. Together they had five children: Karen, Thomas, Susan, John Lloyd, and Bruce.

Pet shelter crew exhibits Mayor's call for volunteers in 2025
Mayor Emil Garza proclaimed recently that he is hoping everyone will join in to make 2025 the “Year of Volunteerism” because there are so many ways citizens can volunteer or lend a hand at a non profit or a city event. Pet Adoptions of Cuero, the non profit pet shelter, has a reason to brag about its wonderful supportive dog walking and dog and cat socializing crew.

Seeing Double-Double: Lady Gobblers dominate in district matches
It was a big night for the Cuero Lady Gobblers and an even bigger night for Arissa Carbonara and Aubrey Bowles, who both had a double-double, as the Lady Gobblers handed the Lady Apaches their 15th loss of the season with a score of 60-35 on Tuesday, January 7.

Gobblers down Rockets
Friday night, the atmosphere inside the gym was electric as the Cuero Gobblers faced off against the San Antonio Kennedy Rockets to kick off district play. From the tip-off, it was clear that both teams were ready to battle. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Gobblers able to establish a 7-point lead. Junior Walker Dietze and Sophomore Dae Dae Bonner played a significant factor, ending the night with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 12 points, 5 rebounds respectively.

Cuero Regional Hospital Blood Drive Cuero Regional Hospital will be hosting a blood drive for the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in the Education Classroom on Thursday, January 16th, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Anyone who is 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood.

Firefighter thanked for 2 decades’ service
Friends and co-workers gathered at the Cuero Fire Department on the cold and drizzly day of the recent cold front to wish first responder Juan Soliz a happy retirement. He served 19 years and seven months as a fire and AEMT for the Cuero Fire Department.

Film crew finds friends in Cuero
Behind the scenes last week, city and county leaders mobilized to help a Los Angeles film crew shoot footage for an episode about “mysterious legends.” Charlie Cook, an LAbased story producer, said that communities don’t always welcome film crews. “We found the opposite in Cuero,” he said.
