County buys land for JP2 building
At their regular meeting on March 10, DeWitt County Commissioners approved the land purchase in Yorktown for a new building to be used by the Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace. They also heard a review of the county’s 2024 financial standing from an outside auditor.

School board focuses on student outcomes
Most school boards start their meetings recognizing the achievements of a few of their students and teachers, but the Yorktown ISD school board consistently spends at least 50% of its meetings recognizing students and focusing directly on their growth.

Cuero Livestock Market
There were 188 cows and 39 bulls. The packer cow and bull market were steady and consistent with last week’s prices. The calf market was outstanding again. Some of the average highs on lighter weight calves were a little lower, but most of the higher weight averages were $5-$20/ cwt higher. We had another record average high at $1549.00/calf.

Commission publishes newly translated history of county
If you are a fan of Texas history and especially DeWitt County history, you will enjoy a special event celebrating a new book about the people and places of this county in the late 1800s. The DeWitt County Historical Commission helped this county celebrate its 175th anniversary in 2021, and a portion of the event’s financial support was dedicated to publishing this book. Titled “History of De-Witt County 1899,” the book is a result of translation and research of a German language study discovered in Yorktown in 2020.

Chamber celebrates night of successes
The “Carnival of Success” Cuero Chamber of Commerce Banquet on March 13 celebrated, in Mardi Gras style, the successes of 2024 and introduced the new president and board of directors for 2025. Cecilia Hedrick, the outgoing president and owner of “Be,” expressed gratitude for her board members.

Pageant production planned for August
For many years, the Cuero Chamber of Commerce sponsored the Miss Cuero Court. But in 2023, in order to focus on Cuero’s growth, they ceased their sponsorship, turning it over to the Miss Golden Crescent organization to manage.

Beware of more fast transactions out of fear
In late February, an elderly Cuero Resident was contacted and told that one of her financial accounts was compromised. The scammers told the victim that they would have to make a deposit to cover the financial loss. They then made arrangements with the victim for a courier to pick up a large sum of money from their address. A courier arrived and the victim gave them a large amount of money in cash. The suspect (Asian male) was captured on video surveillance.
