Lawmakers to tackle soaring home insurance rates
Top state lawmakers plan to address soaring homeowners insurance premiums when they return to Austin in January for the next legislative session, according to the Houston Chronicle. The state’s insurance commissioner, Cassie Brown, told a Senate committee that home insurance rates increased last year by more than 21% statewide, twice the average increase in 2022.

Dear Editor, Cuero is extremely fortunate to have an acute care hospital with its corresponding clinics. Providing healthcare has significant challenges. Taking calls, answering questions and scheduling appointments are currently some of the most substantial.

Thank you for successful Women in Business event
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended the 2024 Cuero Chamber Women in Business Luncheon on September 25th. It was a truly inspiring event, made possible by the support of many individuals and businesses within our community. With over 120 local female leaders attending, it was a hit and we are already planning for the 2025 luncheon!

Project 2025 data shows little evidence of voter fraud
Data compiled by the Heritage Foundation, architect of the controversial Project 2025, indicates noncitizen voting in Texas is not a widespread problem, the Texas Newsroom reported. A database maintained since 2017 houses state data since 2005.

Border Patrol faulted in Uvalde school shooting
A 200-page report from the Department of Homeland Security faulted U.S. Border Patrol agents who rushed to the Uvalde school shooting in 2022, concluding they “failed to establish command and had inadequate training” in one of the deadliest classroom attacks, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Eliminating property taxes would require massive funding
Eliminating the state’s property taxes is high on the wish list of some Republican lawmakers. They received a reality check last week when state budget officials said doing so would require the state to produce $81 billion each year to cover the costs of public schools, as well as the revenue now received by cities, counties and special taxing districts through property taxes.

Comptroller: Hundreds of new homes needed to cut costs
A 26-page report from the Texas Comptroller concludes that the state needs 306,000 more homes than it has, a shortage that has sent housing costs soaring, The Texas Tribune reported. Homebuilding hasn’t kept up with the booming economy as millions of new residents have moved here over the past decade, leaving more than half of the state’s homeowners and renters struggling to find and keep affordable housing.

Power grid again reaches record demand
The dog-day heat wave has sent power demands to new records, the Austin American- Statesman reported. With much of the state enduring an excessive heat warning, power demand peaked at 85,559 megawatts last week, breaking a record set last August.

Thank you TEAM Retirement Solutions, ATPE: Assoc. of Texas Professional Educators, TCTA: Texas Classroom Teachers Assoc., Trust Texas Bank, TDECU, GVEC, Brazos Valley Schools Membership Development, CFN: Cuero First National Bank, Cuero Regional Hospital, Cuero Nursing & Rehab, Texas Farm Bureau, West End Boutique, Cuero Education Foundation, DeWitt Poth and Sons, Mr. Richard Borchard, Special Stitch, Wal-Mart, and Mr. Larry Weaver. Along with our hardworking maintenance/ custodial staff and food service staff for working extra to make this an exciting time for our entire staff. The Convocation allows everyone time to reflect on the summer and prepare for the upcoming school year. Once again thank you!
