Cuero Livestock Market
Number of Head: 1477 There were 218 cows, 31 bulls and 2 goats. The packer cow and bull market were steady with last week’s prices. The calf market was a mixed bag this week. With the commodity board down rather hard on Thursday and Friday, the new crop calves were quite a bit lower than the yearling and conditioned cattle. The demand is still strong though.

Student authors write of cattle drives
ELE C HEW Staff Reporter The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum held a “Student Author Book Signing Event” to celebrate the top Hunt Elementary Student Authors from the first writing contest on April 9. Fourth and fifth graders wrote first-person journal entries as if they were on a cattle drive in the 1800s.

Orozco elected to Texas History Board
Dr. Cynthia E. Orozco of Cuero was recently elected to the board of the Alliance for Texas History. The Alliance was founded in 2024 to foster a comprehensive understanding of the rich and diverse history of Texas. The Alliance sponsors an annual conference, maintains a website with recent news about Texas history, and will soon publish its first journal, the Journal of Texas History. Its second conference is slated for May 15-17 in San Marcos.

Record Elections
The May 3 election has three contested races: two At-Large Members on the Cuero City Council, two director seats on the DeWitt County Hospital District, and one trustee position on the Cuero ISD School Board. Last week, the city council candidates were featured. This week, statements from the hospital board and school board candidates are included. Also, this evening (Wednesday, April 16) a Candidate Forum will be held at 6 p.m. at the Cuero Municipal Clubhouse with candidates from all three races answering questions from a moderator. Early voting begins Tuesday, April 22.

Lady Gobblers head to playoffs
LAURA P ATEK contributing writer The Lady Gobblers topped off their final district game on Friday, April 11 with a 12-8 win in Gonzales, to come away as three-peat District Champs. The game began with both teams scoring two runs in the first, and Gonzales taking the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the second.

Gobbler Baseball undefeated in district play
LAURA P ATEK contributing writer Professional baseball player Mike Trout once said “You have to want it more than anyone else.” With that mentality, the Cuero Gobblers continued their district winning streak on the diamond with a decisive 10-1 victory over the Gonzales Apaches at Gobbler Field on April 11. The Friday night rivalry highlighted some strong pitching and a defensive team effort for the Gobblers to take away their fifth district win.

Golf teams advance to regional tournament

Paxton challenges Cornyn for senate seat
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton made it official last week, announcing he will challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in next March’s Republican primary. The fireworks already have begun, the Austin American-Statesman reported, with Cornyn calling his rival “a con man and a fraud.” Paxton, for his part, said he is running to “fight for President Trump’s agenda and take a sledgehammer to the D.C. establishment.” He accused Cornyn of being insufficiently loyal to Trump.

DeWitt County designated disaster area for drought by USDA
This Secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation, or to refinance certain debts. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability.
