Jail requests repairs of failing water heaters
Sheriff Carl Bowen informed the DeWitt County Commissioners that six of 10 hot water heaters in the county jail were out of service during the regular meeting on January 13. Though the repair request was urgent due to possibilities of leaks, the jail will have to make due until the vendor submits a quote at the next Commissioner’s Court meeting.

Hospital program addresses nurse shortage
Texas is facing a nursing shortage, just like the entire United States. The Center for Nursing Workforce Studies reports a projected shortage of approximately 57,000 RNs in Texas by 2032. This shortage will impact the quality of patient care, as well as patient satisfaction.

Agencies, universities seek $24.6 billion in new funding
The Texas Senate’s chief budget writer said state agencies and higher education institutions have requested nearly $25 billion in funding as the legislative session gets underway. State Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, told The Dallas Morning News that the requests for new money reflect the growing functions and purposes of state agencies that serve the public.

Yoakum accident victim turns loss into hope for faith-filled lives
On a foggy January morning in 2023, a small plane carrying five men from Memphis, TN, crashed in Yoakum, rocking the Yoakum community and leaving a deep scar on the hearts of many in Memphis. Among those on board were five men: beloved fathers, husbands, and leaders of the faith community. Four of the passengers lost their lives on impact, while their Pastor, Dr. Kennon Vaughan, miraculously survived. Vaughan was transported to a Victoria hospital and eventually to a larger trauma center in San Antonio, where he underwent numerous operations and procedures to save his life. Through the power of prayer, and the overwhelming grace of God, Pastor Vaughan lived and has made a nearly full recovery.

Behind the scenes last week, city and county leaders mobilized to help a Los Angeles film crew shoot footage for an episode about “mysterious legends.” Charlie Cook, an LAbased story producer, said that communities don’t always welcome film crews. “We found the opposite in Cuero,” he said.

Friends and co-workers gathered at the Cuero Fire Department on the cold and drizzly day of the recent cold front to wish first responder Juan Soliz a happy retirement. He served 19 years and seven months as a fire and AEMT for the Cuero Fire Department.

Anyone who is 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood.

Gobblers down Rockets
Friday night, the atmosphere inside the gym was electric as the Cuero Gobblers faced off against the San Antonio Kennedy Rockets to kick off district play. From the tip-off, it was clear that both teams were ready to battle. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Gobblers able to establish a 7-point lead. Junior Walker Dietze and Sophomore Dae Dae Bonner played a significant factor, ending the night with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 12 points, 5 rebounds respectively.

It was a big night for the Cuero Lady Gobblers and an even bigger night for Arissa Carbonara and Aubrey Bowles, who both had a double-double, as the Lady Gobblers handed the Lady Apaches their 15th loss of the season with a score of 60-35 on Tuesday, January 7.
