Dinter Post serves community then and now
In the iconic Vietnam movie, The Deer Hunter, the wedding reception scene takes place in an American Legion Hall. It seemed only natural to use the American Legion as the backdrop for a social gathering, keeping in line with the history of many American Legion halls across the United States.

As more and more applications for veteran’s benefits go online or become QR codes, applying is supposed to be “easier.” Unfortunately for many veterans, that application process has become more convoluted. Jeff Zengerle comes to the rescue and even makes house calls.

Warship named for Cuero man
We drive by the historical marker in the Cuero City Park so much we may forget its message. In 1943, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy announced the naming of a new warship the U.S.S. Harmon. Born in Cuero, Leonard Roy Harmon lost his life in 1942, serving aboard the U.S.S. San Francisco during the WWII Battle of Guadalcanal. He was killed while helping evacuate the wounded and sheltering an injured shipmate with his body. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism. The U.S.S. Harmon was the first Navy ship named after an African American.

Home game against Shiner this Friday
Last chance to watch the 2024 Wildcat football team at home will be on Friday, Nov 8. Yorktown will face Shiner in their final district game. The Comanches started the season with a three game losing streak, falling to Hallettsville, Rice Consolidated, and Poth before winning six consecutive games. Currently, they are 4-0 in district play having defeated Louise in a shutout win last week, 6v Shiner does not post stats to MaxPreps so it is difficult to have current statistical information to report on individual players however the team is ranked 11 in 2A Division II standings. They are returning seven offensive and eight defensive starters from last year's squad that advanced to 2A Division I Area Finalist. Dave Campbell’s Football Magazine predicted the Comanches as the frontrunner in District 15 2A DII, taking advantage of a sea- soned team and having dropped down a division from previously. Standout for the Comanches is Preseason Defensive MVP, linebacker Kyle Adamek.

CISD Education Foundation Grants help students certify for jobs
The Cuero ISD Education Foundation Grant Program continues to make a significant impact on students, teachers, and the community. A standout example is Cuero High School instructor Laura Notaro’s “Cruisin’ with My Foodies” program. Awarded the grant for two consecutive years, Notaro has been imparting essential culinary skills to her students. Through hands-on experiences, Mrs. Notaro has been teaching them the intricacies of meal preparation, the importance of kitchen hygiene and the art of creative cooking.

To graze or not to graze: Johnsongrass considerations
Contrary to what some people believe, it is surprisingly common for folks to graze cattle and other livestock on Johnsongrass. To many this productive plant provides high quality “free” forage. But of course, there is always the risk of prussic acid (or cyanide, HCN) poisoning. There are many ranchers here in DeWitt County that graze cattle on Johnsongrass each year. Most understand the dangers of prussic acid once we get into the hot dry summer months, and in the fall when first frost occurs. I do occasionally get reports of ranchers losing a few head of cattle to prussic acid poisoning. I also get many phone calls each year with questions related to grazing Johnsongrass and the potential for prussic acid.

The Cuero Record Devotional Page
Most of us as Christians know that our faith in Jesus Christ is enough to overcome the tragedies that, at some time, will affect us. Then again, is our faith that strong? Many of us will lose earthly possessions but many of us understand they are only temporary anyway.
